  • THIS IS A REVIEW OF HORIZON ANIMAL HOSPITAL'S BOARDING SERVICE, NOT THEIR VETERINARY SERVICE. Initially I was very happy to find this place for boarding our dog. I was glad to find a kennel that was open on Sunday's, the day we were flying home, so our dog did not need to stay an extra night away from home. The positive reviews were comforting as well. The front desk staff was loving and kind to our dog when she was dropped off and picked up. They were welcoming of my phone call during her stay to inquire of her well being. The fact that they were also the least expensive in our area was an added bonus. But the old adage "you get what you pay for" holds true here, in my opinion. I was contacted on day 4 of her stay that she had diarrhea and it was most likely stress related. I cut my trip short to pick her up and sure enough she was one sick doggie. I took her to the vet the next day and was told she has a nasty parasite called giardia. She was prescribed a round of antibiotics. Two days after I picked up my dog I called and spoke to the interim manager of the boarding facility, Brenda, to make her aware of my dogs diagnosis so she and her staff may take the necessary sanitation steps to prevent any other dogs from getting sick. First of all, it would have been thoughtful and professional if I had received a followup phone call from someone on the boarding staff after I took her home asking how my dog was feeling, but I didn't. Or it would have been thoughtful if during our conversation Brenda would have shown concern and compassion and asked how my dog was feeling, but she didn't. Instead her comments were defensive and short and her tone was flat. She stated that a dog can pick up a parasite from anywhere. Well, my dog was not sick when she was dropped off and I was notified of her illness on day 4 of her boarding. Based on the timing it is obvious that the parasite was picked up from their facility while she was in their care. If I could give zero stars I would. I question their sanitation practices and it pains me to see my dog so sick. She has been home 3 days now and she has received 7 baths and her crate bedding has been washed 5 times. She is getting better with the antibiotics, but it's a slow process. Trust me you do not want to your dog to be exposed to this nasty parasite. They also did not feed my dog two of her meals. I individually prepackaged each of her meals and because I returned earlier than expected they return her uneaten meals to me. Based on the number of days she was boarded and the number of meals they return it was obvious they had skipped 2 of her meals. What kind of facility would do such a horrible thing??? I called them a couple of days after boarding my dog to inquire about a routine tendon surgery she will eventually need on her hind leg. I was told they would discuss it with the vet and get back to me with more information and a price. I never heard back from them. When I picked her up I mentioned to the gal at the front desk I never received a return call. She commented that I could have had the surgery done while she was boarded. Kind of an interesting comment when they are the ones that dropped the ball. Besides, I would not be comfortable leaving my dog in a boarding faculty while recovering from surgery. On a minor note, but possibly an indication of how inefficient this facility is managed they attempted to give me another pets blanket when I was picking her up. They were able to locate her blanket in the back. I have boarded my dog several times over the years and did not have one issue with any of the other facilities she has stayed at. We will never trust our sweet dog to their care again. If you do decide to use this faculty it may be wise to inquire if they hired a permanent manager or if it's still being managed by an interim manager. The level of staff that is managing this facility may make a big difference in the quality of care your animal will receive. However, my suggestion would be to avoid this place completely if you want your pet to receive quality care.
