| - Salt of the Earth was one of the restaurants I had been meaning to try before leaving the Pittsburgh area, so a group of us got together to try it out. We weren't able to get a reservation so we decided to try the first floor. As a side note, the entire party must be present to be seated. My husband and I tried to arrive early to put our names in. It wasn't an issue since there was plenty of seating available.
I wasn't a big fan of the atmosphere. The communal seating is fine, but everyone was craning their necks to see the menu written on the wall blackboard. The menu itself leaves something to be desired and could use some verbs. It would have been nice to have a better idea of what will be your entire dinner. I think most of us were surprised at what we ended up with.
The food was okay. I had the tofu curry (farro, chard, parmesan, curry). It was good, but it didn't go above and beyond the way I was hoping. My husband had the pho and felt similarly. We could have gotten the same thing elsewhere.
While the experience was definitely interesting, it wasn't really one that I care to repeat, especially at that price tag. I'm glad I went, but if you are looking for truly inspired dishes and want a great dining experience, I would try Legume or Root 174.
