| - At the suggestion of my Paxton meat, yogurt, and egg supplier (Central Lean)... I headed down to Common Ground to check it out! Needless to say this place blows Strawberry Fields out of the water in selection, service, and prices! And they are about a mile apart!
I am NOT going to get into all the special items they have because I feel the other forty or so reviews have already covered the organic, vegan, and fair trade categories!
It seems to be that Urbana has a downtown area that seems to be developing more and more each time I visit. Black Dog, Bunny's Tavern, and Courier Cafe are all within walking distance of this place as well! So if you want something different, Urbana is a good choice!
This place is located in a mall type area where Broadway dead ends.
I entered from the north side of this buidling, so I was a bit confused. I was pointed in the right direction by some really some green signs that said "Common Ground Co-op...this way.
If you have ever been to Whole Foods in the Chicago suburbs or anywhere across the nation you will appreciate this place! As I mentioned before they have Central Lean products which is my local food store as well as Applegate, Evol Foods, Uncle Bob's Red Mill, and Alterra offee. All items here are raised or provided by local farmers and merchants... which I think is really cool especially down here in central Illinois.
Speaking of central Illinois....the politics are about as red as a three year old bottom after running away from mom and getting a spanking in the middle of the grocery store.
Fear not hippies! You can wear your hemp here without fear! Card carrying PETA memeber? Organic dog food sold here! Does your Prius need an air freshner? I bet Common Ground has the cafe free air purifier you've been looking for!
Being adjacent to a college campus brings out some strange characters (insert "finding myself" quote here), but don't let these sandal wearing, Obama voting, and guitar/banjo/ukelele clientele keep you away!
I left with some vegetables and Americano. They have a full service cafe (just like Strawberry Fields...but I am sure it is cheaper). Of course you might pay a little more for your organic coconut oil here. Not overpriced like around the corner at Strawberry Fields. I can't wait to be back!
