| - There's a moderately happy ending at the end of this review. First an account of the original complaint below and then an account of the settlement after that..........
Is your realtor suggesting HSA as a home warranty company--RUN, RUN!!
We agreed to make the cost of an HSA home waranty a part of our closing expenses. Shortly after we moved into our condo, the furnace failed. Six part story:
Part 1: We called a reputable furnace repair company which diagnosed the problem, but suggested we use our home warranty service to get the work done.
Part 2: We called HSA and they recommended a repair company. The owner came out but said he didn't know much about these systems and would have his assistant come.
Part 3: Assistant came, talked to the first company about the issue and filed a report consistent with the first company about what needed to be done.
Part 4: HSA said they wanted a second opinion and made an appointment for us with California Express. The first California Express guy did not come. We called HSA back and they said he tried to call us, even though neither my wife nor I showed a lost call or a message.
Part 5: HSA sent a second California Express guy who said the problem was too much freon. HSA said they didn't cover maintenance, so we'd have to pay for that guy and they would not pay for repairs.
Part 6: The assistant for the first company HSA recommended came back to repair another condo owners unit and we told him about California Express and the "final decision" from HSA. He was amazed, said the diagnosis was bogus.
Conclusion: HSA pretends to be a home warranty service, but keeps sending repairmen until they can get someone to say there's no problem. Stay AWAY from HSA and stay AWAY from California Express!!
FOLLOW UP: Just after I submitted this review and one to Angie's List, I called HSA to tell them (again) about my dissatisfaction and to ask for a reconsideration. Long story short: I was connected to a supervisor, a very nice young woman named Amanda, who after some reasonable questions and fact-finding authorized in writing an HSA expenditure of $950 on the (roughly) $1150 cost of the repair AND let me use a repair company from Angie's List rather than their own set of providers. The repair person is due on Thursday. Right now it looks like, with some second and third level expressions of concern, HSA is making things right. If I had gotten this result without the epic melodrama above, I'd be giving HSA 4 or 5 stars. Given the total experience, though, and if there are no further additions to the review, it tells readers this was a "three-star" experience and HSA finally came through and deserves a move from 1 star to three stars.
