  • It was a perfect Labour Day weekend Saturday evening and my boyfriend and I had just left Second City. We were hungry and stumbled upon the Town Crier on our hunt for burgers. My theory is if a place is busy, it's gotta be awesome. Well, this patio literally could not have been more packed. Everyone was elbow to elbow with their neighbors, packed like sardines. To me, this meant we HAD to join in the fun. My boyfriend however, was a bit more leery of this plan. He didn't like the idea of sitting so close to strangers. When we asked how long the food would take, the waitress said "not long at all" which was all my hungry boyfriend needed to hear. We took a seat right along the John street pedestrian road, which lead to hours of entertainment from people-watching. (There was presumably a costume party somewhere nearby, or just a lot of strangely dressed people!) First we ordered two light beers from our chipper waitress who had to stand a bit of a distance away, due to the crowded setup. We received the beer quickly, especially considering how busy she must have been. For dinner we both ordered the same thing: The Town Crier burger with fries, however my American boyfriend upgraded his to a poutine, (wanting to experience a true "Canadian" dish). We each loved the burger, which was simple but good quality. The bun was hearty and grainy, seemingly healthier than many restaurant buns. The burger was slightly dry, but with ketchup, mustard, pickles and the works, it tasted great. All this adds up to a 4 in my books, due to the great ambiance, tasty food and pleasant service.
