| - I have a tendency to be very particular when looking for the right place or the right product. I will get online and waste countless hours, sifting through reviews, checking to see if they're up-to-date, examining them to determine whether or not it is a negative review from competition or a jaded ex-employee; I try to read more about the product or the service that interests me, taking care to note whether the research I find is credible; etc. When it comes to my hair, I'm no different.
I've probably had over 20 different hair stylists by now as I have no problem leaving a place and searching for a new one when I'm not satisfied. Sometimes, I even try to find a place when I'm out of town for fun. I absolutely love walking into new places for the first time, admiring the design, the layout, the furniture, the ambiance, the rhythm, if you will. The funny thing about hair stylists is that it almost feels like a relationship. You're always looking for "the right one," you're uncomfortable to "break up with them," and sometimes you find yourself talking about the "previous" ones with them.
Now, almost every single time I would receive a haircut, I would never feel impressed immediately after it was done. There was perhaps one stylist before that impressed me on the first cut, but then my feelings for it faded ever so slowly with subsequent cuts. Usually, however, it would be "okay" and then I would sort of reason myself into liking it or would find that it looked good once it grew in a little bit. It took me a while to realize that THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN!!! You should NEVER have to talk yourself into liking a haircut, let alone anything (clothes, shoes, TVs, books, movies, music, etc.). If it's THAT good, you'll like it right away.
It is precisely because of the above experiences that I could not be happier that I crossed paths with Krista Jee. She is the only stylist I've had who has given me a haircut that I've loved from the moment that last lock of hair hits the floor. She just has a way about her that gives you the impression that she truly enjoys her craft. It's almost as if it's not simply a career for her, but an art (and one that she takes very seriously). As if that were not enough, she is also one who really knows how to take her time with you. I'm sure some of you know what I'm talking about. You walk into that salon and it feels like you're walking into a fastfood restaurant. As soon as they take your order, you're rushed through and pushed out the door. That is definitely not the case with Krista. I have no idea if she has a "favorite client," but she knows how to make you feel like you are her ONLY client. I have no patience for those who have no patience for me.
Of course, it would be inappropriate for me to sit here and rant and rave about Krista without talking about the salon itself because that place is wonderful as well. As another reviewer pointed out, it can be a bit tricky to locate, but if you call them as you're driving around in circles in downtown Pittsburgh (on a hands-free device of course), there are other employees who know the lay of the land extremely well and are very skilled at guiding you safely to your destination. Upon arriving, I was taken in by the nice view of the city that you find in the salon. What is more, every employee seemed to be on the cheerful side, having fun with their clients and smiling at you, acknowledging your presence. Even the other clients seemed friendly to one another. There's really a nice sense of community and I don't seem to detect the drama that you find in many other salons. I was overjoyed when they offered me coffee or tea, especially when I found out that they didn't cheap out on any of the ingredients (cheap, over-processed sugar for instance). And, unless I'm mistaken, I also believe there's a wine bar that I'll have to explore next time I stop by.
I'm not going to mislead you. This salon is a little on the expensive side, using very exclusive, high-end products. While it is true that the old adage, "You get what you pay for," is unreliable, it is most definitely true in this instance. You DO get what you pay for here. In spite of the prices, I never had any experience of snobbery if I asked how much something cost and I never felt pressured to buy anything. In fact, I don't even remember any product being recommended to me until I asked first. I like when a place waits for me to make the first move and doesn't have unreasonably high expectations of me as just another, mere customer. Not the case at all. Instead, I feel exactly how I felt when I first walked in and the receptionist smiled and greeted me...like a person.
