Because of past experiences with other large party-friendly, expansive "Mexican" menu, margarita-obsessed restaurants (*cough* El Torito, Acapulco *cough*), I almost dreaded having dinner there.
I expected watered down, over-saccharine drinks, bland meat, weak salsas, and to eat my weight in tortilla chips.
What we got were surprisingly good margaritas (even the happy hour one I ordered for the first round, nicely charred sizzling meat and juicy shrimp, and a trio of dips to include two tasty salsas and a dip bean that ensured I would still eat my weight in tortilla chips.
Let's back up to the margaritas. Happy Hour margaritas are usually 99% margarita mix and have no strength. They're also usually some ridiculous price like $2. The HH drinks here come in at around $6 on average, but actually have some body to them. I was surprised to find that even the flavored selections didn't wuss out. That said, on round two, I opted for a full-priced spicy watermelon margarita. It was an extra $2 well spent.
The food exceeded my expectations. A first timer should definitely order the flaming fajitas. Aside from the name of the place practically telling you to, you should do this if for nothing else than the sheer spectacle that is the meat arriving on a round custom "JFFC" grill. Said grill is then set on fire causing an eruption of flames at such heights that I wonder how many servers have lost their eyebrows as part of regular dinner service. Come on, man. It's in the name.
My husband and I ordered the combo fajitas for two and opted for steak and shrimp. Oh, yeah. If you have an eating partner, are a greedy face, or like to eat dinner leftovers by yourself for a few meals after, get the combo. It just looks cool. Bigger is better, right (yay, 'Murica?).
My only squabbles on the food would be that the number of shrimp provided and the sides. The portion of shrimp provided for maybe 2.5 per fajita if you used 3 tortillas for the meal. As for the sides, if you're going to the tex-mex, gringo-leaning menu, then cover the beans in cheese. Smother those things. Yeah, yeah. I know I'm Asian and well on my way to lactose-intolerance, but I love my cheese-covered beans.
Aside from that, service was just okay. I didn't get the impression that our server cared much for us, but perhaps it was because it was a Thursday and he was as over the week as the rest of us. He gets a pass.
Based on the scene when I arrived, I would suggest making reservations. When we arrived at about 5:15pm, the lobby area was packed and wait times were at around 25 minutes. Luckily for me, this experienced was skipped thanks to folks from our party having arrived early to snag a table.
Anyway, does this place suck? No. Is it like the El Toritos and Acapulcos of the world? It's a better, upgraded version. Is it the best Mexican food in Vegas? Not by a long shot.
But I'm not mad at it.
