  • I've tried to give this trail a chance a few times and I frankly think it's not as wonderful as it's hyped up to be. To be fair, people look for different things when they go hiking. I personally like to find solitude with nature while admiring my surroundings. At the Cholla Trail, I'm only able to do the latter. Upon first arriving, you have to accept that parking is limited and park half a mile or more from the trailhead. It's gotten so crowded this springtime that there is security parked by the trailhead to prevent people from dropping off their loved ones! Once you've parked, you share the narrow upward trail with many other hikers which can often affect pacing and focus. I've come on weekdays during mid afternoon and late afternoons, and it is always crowded with groups of people. But okay, minus the crowds, there is an admirable 360 view you earn once you've conquered the upward climb. It can be a challenge, and the hike varies by fitness level, obviously favoring the more fit. I saw a lot of out-of-towners who weren't used to the terrain, and although I think the views are great, I do think that should play a factor in choosing this particular trail. If you are visiting and do choose this as your first trail in Phoenix, just remember to take your time and bring lots of water! It's not your fault your silly cousin brought you to climb a steep mountain!
