| - Meh. Don't have your baby here (doctors are great- but unfortunately everything else is well below the standard of care).
I had my child at NYGH. He was breech- which I was well aware of since 28 weeks. I had ultrasounds weekly from 35 weeks +, and still breech- all ultrasounds done at nYGH.
I went into labour at 38 weeks. Was assessed in their triage, and was asked minimal questions (only LMP and due date- literally Nothing else- and I had a High risk pregnancy) by the nurses there. No one examined me (to assess baby's position, or how far I had progressed in labour). So eventually I realized that despite all of my US being done at NYGH these nurses probably didn't look at them.,. I called one of the nurses back to tell her my baby was breech- she was shocked and surprised. Like- how does an OB nurse not ask this!?!?!!!
And then I was told my OR for my c section was being arranged. Fine. My husband and I were ushered into a labour and deliver room where we were to wait, and were told I'd be going to the oR in half an hour or less. I asked about pin control NS was told I'd get spinal in the OR - nothing before then. Which would have been okay...
But the nurses seemed to have forgotten about me. I laboured for six hours without anyone checking on me- no nurse. No doctor. I understand emergencies come up in OB all of the time- but how did they not know my baby was in distress if they never checked???
Anyway- my contractions eventually become longer than the time in between them. Despite my wanting pain relief, I had zero pain control, and was inable to actually go thru labour with a footling breech baby.
I finally got ahold of the nurse assigned to me, and she took one look at me and said she'd call the OB ASAP. With the look on her face- I think she felt guilty about ignoring me and was scared that she'd get in trouble.
After not eating or drinking for over six hours, the nurses finally
Decided I should have an IV. Five of them tried. I was fine with the first three- I'm sure it's not An eAsy job- but the last two were awful human beings. They kept trying to readjust and change direction of the IV multiple times after they broke skin, despite my plea NOT to do so (I would rather have a second poke). It was like. Competition for them- like they were the "IV nurse" and would do anything to show up the nurses who called for help. Anyway- the anesthetist was called after all of the nurses failed after treating me like a pin cushion. He kindly gave me some local anesthetic and got my IV.
Anyway finely went to the OR (still experiencing the worst pain imaginable - totally unnecessarily, as I told the nurses from the beginning that I wanted good pain control). Got my first spinal. The OR nurses asked how dilated I was. Umm.. How would I know??? They were shocked that no one examined me. Was prepped and draped... And still having painful contractions and could feel the forceps and knife.. Soooo had to get a second spinal... And reprepped and draped.
So eventually had our beautiful child. Paid for a semiprivate room (insurance did not cover). NOTE- DO NOT MAKE THIS MISTAKE at NYGH!!!!
I paid 500$ to spend nights with not one roommate- but the roommate, her partner (who stayed OVERNIGHT- wtf) and her parents during the day. I was billed almost 500$ for a semi private room. And had to spend it with a mom and child (expected) but also a strange adult male (her partner) overnight and thru the day as well As her visitors. and I was being essentially forced by the nurses (?not RNs but nursing assists?) to breast feed q2h. I actually felt violated by some of them- one polish speaking one essentially pulled my hospital gown down to show me how to b feed. and yelled at me for having A bottle of formula on my dresser (baby was hypo glycemic and as per NYGH protocol had to be given formula). Whoever took over her shift did the same.
Anyway... After sharing my "semiprivate" room with multiple strangers including a old male (making me super uncomfortable) overnight- and I actually was charged for this experiment - I wold never recommend or go back. Too bad bc my OB was great- but the hospital sucks.
Prolonged unnecessary pain. Nursing staff subpar on sooooooooooo many levels. Semi private rooms expensive and not as advertised. Post Partom nurses humiliating (all except the last one I had - she wrote some book for new moms? And let me leave ASAP - supposed to stay 48 hours post c section but she asked if I wanted to leave early (I JUMPED ON THE OFFER) and she streamlined my discharge.) - everything else sucked.
