| - My visit in August 2015 was the worst experience I have ever had with an ER. I had an accident which injured both knees in the same incident. The NP, Andrea Vasquez, did x-rays and said there was nothing broken and ordered a knee immobilizer for the left knee. She ran zero diagnostic tests on the right even though I complained of pain in the right as well and couldn't bear weight on either knee.
When the nurses were trying to put the knee immobilizer on, I was in excruciating pain as they were trying to cram the knee in the brace. They said this is what she ordered. Finally they stopped and went and got her because they could see I was in excruciating pain. The NP came back and said there's nothing broken so there's no reason the immobilizer should cause pain.
The nurse said we'll just put down that you refused the immobilizer and did nothing else to stabilize the knee. They came in with discharge papers and expected me to walk out when I could not bear weight on EITHER knee. Also they offered ZERO pain medication to go home with and I was in horrible pain.
After huffing and such, the nurse went to the NP and came back with a prescription for a wheelchair. A prescription?!? I thought ok I can have my daughter get a wheelchair from Walgreens or something with the prescription. They gave ZERO directions on how to get the wheelchair.
When I got home, I was lucky to be able to borrow a wheelchair to get into bed in excruciating pain. This was one of the worst medical care experiences I've ever had.
The next day I called several medical equipment companies and they said that the hospital needed to call them from the ER and have the wheelchair delivered to the ER for it to be covered by insurance. Once I left the hospital without the wheelchair there was no coverage available. I had to pay $300 out of my own pocket for a wheelchair from Walgreens, that without my families help, I would not have been physically able to get.
I followed up with the orthopedic doctor and after MRIs of both knees, we learned that I had torn several ligaments, the tendon and the quad muscle in the left knee and had a Bakers cyst (a large collection of fluid like a tennis ball, behind the knee). The Bakers cyst was the reason for excruciating pain when trying to flex the knee straight (and cannot be seen on x-ray). The right knee was also severely sprained with a torn meniscus.
I have a heart issue (pulmonary arterial hypertension) and it was recommended that I see the team at St. Joes that specializes in this. Not after my ER experience. No way. If I can't trust them to deliver competent care for knee injuries, they would kill me if I trusted them with my life threatening illness.
It was inhumane the way I was treated at this ER.
*Note the following day I went to Banner Good Sam and my knee was put into a bent knee molded splint and I was given a prescription for pain meds. It was a completely different experience from St. Joes. I followed up with ortho within a day or two after that.
