  • I may have just died and gone to hotel lobby bar nirvana - Free pool (either with balls or with water) party. Free shuffleboard. Free arcade cocktail table game with numerous old school games (we played Qix). A piano that is ripe for some spontaneous sing-alongs. There's even an alcove adorned with Biscuit Street Preacher paintings. The list of diversions is long and likeable, and did I mention all of this is taking place in a nicely appointed hotel lobby? Well, technically the pool is out back, but it's just steps away. As you may know, hotel lobby bars make me giddy. This one had me downing the beers and skipping back and forth to the shuffleboard table where I was kicking my hubbie's butt! 3-0 baby! It's as delightful a discovery as a secret pizza kitchen. The Royal House is tucked away in the Royal Resort, but the lobby bar and the pool are managed separately by a group of local dudes who from what I witnessed are creating a nice alternative to some of the overpriced, overglittered, overstudded, overstuffed offerings of the Strip. It's big and comfortable. We went to check out their Friday night Royal Swim Club party, and the elements were spot on. The music was a creative mix of indie electro with the occasional "oh-no-he didn't" hip hop number. I wanted to dance. Alas, the only thing missing were about 74 of my closest friends. So, it's not really a scene just yet. Come with your own party. Then again, part of me doesn't want to share! So, promise me if you go here, you'll be cool, read at least one good book before you come, and let me play shuffleboard whenever I want. Every Sunday there is a performance part music part film part whatever strikes a creative fancy entitled The Sunday Sermon at 9pm. Note to self: need to check it out. The beer list is solid, and the bartender is a good one. The only thing missing was a list of tasty, specialty cocktails, which I was told is in the works. (Being rather presumptuous, I asked if they could throw in a ginger beer number for me. The beer made me a bit audacious.) I contemplated deducting one star for the lack of cocktails, but even without the cocktails, I am still planning on going back as soon as possible, so that tells me it must be as good as it gets for me.
