  • Oakmont Bakery is pretty much a Pittsburgh namesake of gold standard cakes. It's a name with notoriety. Like, OMG it's not just cake but it's from Oakmont Bakery. Let the salivating begin. I've eaten many birthday cakes and wedding cakes from here over the years, but had never stepped foot in the bakery itself until this past weekend. I imagined a quaint setup like most local bakeries, and worried they might be running out of things because I stopped by mid afternoon, usually around the time most bakeries close. This couldn't be further from the truth. This business is a behemoth on the street, with two buildings stretching at least a few hundred feet in length. Coming in on a Saturday on an unseasonably warm February day probably wasn't the best course of action, but I was stopping in on a whim because I was in the area. It was crazy busy, chaotic even. You must take a number to be waited on. They were 20 numbers deep when I pulled mine, but they went through customers fast. I picked up a small pre made vanilla almond cake for my mom's birthday. Then grabbed a few gourmet cupcakes for a sweet indulgence: the Godfather, an espresso and biscotti number, and Elvis in Oakmont, a peanut butter and banana flavored combo. They happily iced the top of the cake with a custom birthday greeting. Cakes were moist, tasty, and the cupcakes had great layers of flavor. They also have glass case among glass case of other various sweets, including cookies, doughnuts, macarons and gluten-free items. They have longer hours than most bakeries, open until 7 p.m. most nights! But the crowds did make me a little claustrophobic.
