| - I thought this place would be a lot better. I knew it would be kitschy, but I thought the menu looked good, and I figured it was more upscale than the trashy mediocre diner food that it actually was.
If you read the reviews, there's a common theme that the service is usually bad. This was true. It wasn't AWFUL service because our waitress was reasonably pleasant and friendly, but she was inattentive and forgetful. My wife's ceviche tacos didn't have guacamole like they were supposed to, she wasn't asked which type of salsa she wanted, and she never got the gumbo she ordered. Ever. And the waitress was so hit and miss with service, my wife didn't really have a chance to ask for the gumbo again.
The food itself was bland and forgettable. We started with the salsa/queso trio. The chips were a little stale, and the salsas weren't flavorful. The queso was decent (although if you're looking for true Texas-style queso, walk on). Then I ordered the beef bulgogi roti. Why are rotis being served at a seafood fusion place? Who cares! Why not? The beef was more like meat loaf than bulgogi, the rice was NOT SALTED AT ALL, and the habanero apple butter sauce wasn't even spicy. I ate half, which was more than enough. No flavor whatsoever. I got mac and cheese as my side. It tasted like sadness, and it had a lovely clump of burned cheese on top to really class the dish up. It also came with a tiny little salad...which was spring mix and tomatoes. No dressing of any kind.
The drinks can be all over the place. The jalapeƱo margarita was a hit, the sweet tea vodka was mediocre, and the berry thing (it's like vodka and agua fresca) was saccharine sweet and not drinkable.
Skip this one. If you want GOOD diner food with better service, go for The Diamond. If you want good seafood, go literally anywhere else.
