  • I came here Saturday afternoon with a friend to sample some whisky and plan a Grand Canyon trip (a Planyon, if you will). Should've come with realistic expectations about the latter because all our attention was on the distillery and talking shop with the really friendly guys working there! After a couple samples and drinks, we took a tour of the production end where they happened to be running a batch through the still, which was cool to see (you can actually stick a finger into the hydrometer reservoir and give the intermediate product a taste!). The coolest part to me, though, is how the distillery is a self-funded personal project of the guys working there, and that definitely comes across in the tour (e.g. brainstorm sessions written on a whiteboard next to the bottling area). Our guide (a full time aerospace engineer) was very knowledgeable of he whole process and happy to answer our many questions. And of course the most important part: the booze was phenomenal; the gin, rum, and bourbon were some of the best I've had. Unlike a lot of other distilleries who buy their stuff from a large factory and run it through their still just to say it was made there, Adventurous Stills does everything themselves, start to finish, so the quality is fully controlled. They're also looking into incorporating some ancient grains in their next batches, so that should definitely be worth checking out!
