I've been to a lot of visitors center at a lot of National Forests, and I can honestly praise this one for having exceptional air conditioning, reasonably-priced postcards, and friendly and helpful people behind the counter. I enjoyed touching the samples of various desert creatures' fur, looking at a scale model of the lake, and admiring the mounted deer heads. I would also like to thank the woman who assured my law-abiding friend that we could swim wherever we felt like it, entering the water from anywhere on the lakeshore. Our afternoon swims during our 4-day stay in the area were greatly enhanced by him not freaking out every time I wanted to hike through the desert to find a bathing spot that wasn't overrun by giant recreational vehicles running powerful generators. Definitely stop in if you'll be in the region for a bit and need to get your bearings.
