  • Location: In Le Carrefour Laval, near The Bay. The place: It's your typical Apple store - big, high ceilings, packed with people. The goods: For me, the 'goods' involved an appointment at the Genius bar because of an issue I was having with my Mac. I initially chatted with an Apple person online, and they sorted me out with an appointment in Laval - I didn't even have to call or do it myself! I showed up at the store and gave my name to a guy with an iPad, and he assigned me to a communal table. I say 'communal' because there were about 20 people at this one table, and there were several such tables spread out on the floor. I'm not really sure how the hell the techs keep track of who belongs to who and at what time, but they seem to have some kind of system in place. My appointment was at 11:30 and 'my guy' was only a few minutes late. After discussing my issue, we confirmed what the problem was and I purchased a replacement cable. I was relieved that it was just the cable because that meant I didn't have to leave the MacTop for an operation - these things make me nervous. An additional perk was that buying the cable from the Genius bar meant a discount of $30 - this is because the warranty is for 3 months as opposed to 12 months if you buy it from the store. I should point out that in both cases, the cable is brand new - the warranty is the only difference. I'm not sure why Apple does this and my guy didn't seem to know either. Service: It was pretty good. My guy was really helpful and made sure that the cable was in fact, my problem. I was sure it was the connector port so he tested out the old and new cables thoroughly so that I could see that the new cable resolved the problem. He also answered some other questions that I had, and took the time to run diagnostics to double-check that I had no software or hardware issues. The only negative is that these guys are super busy and they literally run back and forth between customers so they're kind of like whirlwinds - one minute you see them, next minute, you don't. It's not their fault though - I think Apple should probably hire a few more Geniuses to help alleviate the volume and stress. Price point: The new cable from the Genius bar was $69 as opposed to the store, which was $99.
