| - Don't join this gym. Unethical business practices. Although they have a nice staff (in the early morning) and a facility Fountain Hills needs, I found their business practices with regard to membership simply not ethical. I joined in May of 2011 and did so becuase they are the only gym in Fountain Hills that has a spin bike (though no spin classes). When I joined I had to pay for the first and last month's membership dues (typical for most gyms). On my second month with the gym, they charged me double for my membership fees, which meant they took an extra $100 out of my account. I'm a single mother and this is a lot of money for me. When I spoke to the owner, she insisted it would take a week to put the money back into my account. They refused to refund my money right away. Needless to say, this caused all sorts of havoc for me because of the timing of it. During the course of my membership, I repeatedly told the staff that the spin bike's pedals were broken and needed to be fixed. The straps on the pedals were non-existent and the clips only worked on one side. Although the staff member did try to fix this herself on several occasians, the owners let it slide. Finally, the clip on the one side broke beyond repair. I let the staff member know and she told the owner. The next day I was told that since the bike was so old, there were no longer any parts to fix the bike. I said I'd be happy if they just bought a newer, used bike off Craigslist. The staff member then asked if I was considering ending my membership as a result of the broken spin bike. I told her I was thinking about it. About a week later, I did cancel my membership and filled out their form as I had found a gym with similar equipment, but at less than half the cost of their memebership. The staff member then told me that since I was cancelling so close to the billing cycle, I would have to pay for the next month in addition to the last month, because they had no way to stop it from going through (the last month I paid for when I started my membership). They also said I had to pay a $50 fee to cancel because it was before my 2 year "contract" was up. This is a total of $250! I could buy my own spin bike off Craigslist for that! I maintained that I was cancelling because they no longer had the equipement they had when I joined. The staff member said there was nothing she could do because the owners were on vacation. So, in order to keep them from charging yet another month to my account, I called my bank and stopped the charge from going through. Miraculously, the next day, the spin bike had brand new pedals on both sides, though they maintained that there were no parts for that type of bike. When I went to work out on the day after the billing cycle, I was told that I was denied access to the gym because they were unable to bill me for the next month and that I owed them an additional $50. Again, I told them about the fact that I already paid for my last month of membership when I joined the gym. I also reminded them of the equipment issues, which were the reason for cancelling. At this point, I'm trying to get them to refund the balance of my last month that they are not allowing me to use, which is $100, or at least refund me $50 and keep their $50 cancellation fee and be done with it. On top of it, there is also a tanning membership that I have another 2 weeks to use and I am asking them to refund half of it, $20. They are not refunding that to me either. Unethical? I think so. Wish me luck.
