  • A castle in the middle of the city! Such a bizarre concept for a somewhat young city. A city where a 10X10 space (size of a Canadian Prison cell!) is being passed as living space for a bedroom nowadays who would built a castle in the middle of the city. Folks stranger things have happened so here it is an ode to the excess of the 20's moneyed people. This is a good place to visit of you are into architecture. Alas unlike George from Seinfeld I neither am nor wanted to pretend to be an architect. On a nice summer day like today the place was bustling and there was even a lineup at the ticket counter. There are scheduled tours as well as the self guided tours thanks the impressive hand set that provides info to each room complete with screen shots. I preferred the self guided option as I wanted to keep my own schedule. This place is quite big and has approximately 100 rooms. Plenty of history to go around here. There were some posters for the movies that have been shot here. Also worth a mention is that the place can be used as an event space (exclusive catered dinners anyone) Some of the space is impressive and they seemed to have maintained it well however some areas are in the state of disrepair. One of the the place could double as movie set from Saw series with dripping water and dim lit space completing the picture. Also the walkaways are not geared towards the throng of crowds this place witnesses. I wish they served alcohol as I would love to have a pint and enjoy a cigar in the lovely garden. Hmm would I recommend a visit hmm maybe just to walk around in the area but the inside nah. The area is unexpected and has a gorgeous lawn which is kept in immaculate shape and serves the welcome relief from the concrete jungle Toronto has become. So as a park to spend your time sure (tip one can just go across the Spadina Museum next door and relax as there aren't any crowds there)
