| - Good burgers, good prices, strange little restaurant.
Burgers are a little bit blander than they should be, which would be easily remedied with a hotter skillet and better sear on the burgers. But the 'farmhouse' with a fried green tomato was fun and came with an OK tomato chutney, and the 'standard' was standardly good. The burger with corned beef was verging on great but was super duper salty. And for those who are considering non-red meat options, the whitefish sandwich was fine and did the trick, though not much better than that.
For $2 you can get a bowl of fries with béchamel-based toppings. The blue cheese with bacon was pretty good but lacked blue cheese. Similarly, the truffle-parmesan fries are literally a stroke of cheese-sauce genius, brought back to remedial quality by not having enough truffle flavor.
The housemade soda with grapefruit and lime is another great idea, but like the béchamel fries it was much blander than it should have been. I liked it, but a stronger hit of either grapefruit or lime would have made for a destination drink instead of shtick.
The dining room has a full-on identity crisis. It's so dark you can barely see your table and full of faux-pop-art, yet it's populated by children drinking milkshakes and old people. It's occupied by a gigantic bar in the middle of the room that easily loses the restaurant 10 additional tables, yet prices are surprisingly low and there's a big wait for seating.
Overall I like the concept though this place doesn't excel in any specific category except for Wisconsin eccentricity.
