| - I have lived in the Calgary Place Apartments west tower since July, 2013. I first rented the apartment for convenience, as I was working downtown and the price was mostly affordable at the time (still a bit steep for what it was worth. I think I paid $875 for a small 1bdrm). The place I was living in the Beltline was undergoing road and building construction, and I wanted to leave as it was loud and I mostly worked nights. I thought I would be escaping the noise by moving in to a highrise in a cement building, but I was completely wrong. Nevermind the cheap, old windows and frames that keep out absolutely no noise (prepare to sleep with earplugs or white noise at any time of day), constant construction from apartments around you (because the constantly need repairs to aging plumbing and cosmetics), slamming doors, strange people wandering the building, fire alarms constantly going off - you name it.
The water gets shut off almost weekly - with no regard for people who don't work a regular schedule (they couldn't do it over night? Too cheap to pay anyone off regular hours), the heat didn't work two winters in a row with no care for their tenants comfort, the elevators (which are fixed now, were constantly breaking down - leaving me to walk 26 stories often), the pool opens for a week and then closes again due to water quality issues (and is freezing cold anyway), the ceiling in the mailroom burst open one time when I was in there...nearly hitting me with a chunk of plaster. I've had numerous problems with my plumbing - my kitchen sink backed up leaving green sludge in my sink that wouldn't drain, the drain stinks as well (if I don't use it for a few days it makes my apartment smell like death), the toilet needed repairs to keep it from running constantly or flooding. Everything needs a new coat of paint, new carpet, new fixtures, new everything - yet I will be paying $1365 for the last month before I move out in June 2015.
The icing on the cake to finally get me to leave - is the apartment upstairs having plumbing issues for the last few months. As I work late nights, I woke up one morning to find someone working on my bathroom (not sure what they were doing) while I was sleeping. As a female living alone, I naturally freaked out. I kicked him out of my apartment (there was no notice of repairs, no 24 hour request, no indication there was an emergency plumbing issue in the adjoining apartment that I was notified of in advance). An hour later the maintenance man and his manager came back to basically YELL AT ME for kicking him out. I told him to come back in 24 hours and that no one would be allowed in my apartment without notice. Recently, the upstairs apartment has been having plumbing issues, as to which the office called me one morning when I was sleeping to request that someone come in for emergency repairs in my apartment which somehow have to do with the upstairs. I said no, as I was working nights again and to come back the next day. Well, halfway through the next day, no one had showed up yet. I called the office to see why this "emergency" hadn't been taken care of yet, and was told someone would be by in the next few hours. Some emergency... So someone came by and knocked a hole out above my showerhead and left plaster and bits all around the bathroom for ME to clean. A few weeks later (this Monday as I'm writing this Wednesday morning), I had no water pressure in my shower only, and at that time noticed that the hole had MOLD growing in it that I hadn't noticed earlier. I requested that someone fix my water pressure, and as I write this, I still don't have a properly working shower.
So, you have been warned...don't look at the new renovations to the apartment (mine hasn't been renovated since I've been there for 2.5 years - but I still pay the same as everyone else...), the laundry room, the pool, the convenient location - this place is not worth even half of what you will pay. On top of the expensive rent, you must pay $175/monthly to Impark - which has constant repairs, a lack of parking space due to reserved spots, and break-ins constantly (no, it is not secure parking for what you pay). You apartment will smell like your neighbours dinner, you will go without water at least once a week, the neighbourhood is ghetto and sketchy, the C-train is obnoxious, you'll have to deal with extreme noise at all times of day. Your money is better spent in a better maintained building which actually cares about their tenants.
