| - LA Fitness discriminatory and unprofessional?
For the last several years, I have regularly attended this location. The front desk staff varies from polite and welcoming to below-average when you get the reception folks who don't bother looking up or interrupting their own chit chat with co-workers. The gym itself is generally always clean and the maintenance staff are always good.
For the past week, however, the first television has been set to a Christian station showing some kind of Evangelical church service and Christian-Product commercials. I am fully aware that was probably requested by a member and done to accommodate a customer. The first time I noticed the choice of station I was surprised that the company would "go there" in terms of promoting specific religions as opposed to a "News and Sports Only" policy, but it didn't matter that much to me.
However, after seeing the station (that TV is in front of my normal warm up area) for several days now, the sermons - which are put in closed captioning - were twice focused on anti-gay, horribly offensive and discriminatory talk by the pastor. The commercial I saw was for DVDs about the "myth" that gay is normal and to help viewers "rid themselves of this sin from the devil." Is that what LA Fitness believes and wants their members to associate with the company?
I didn't know, so I asked for the manager when I was done with my workout to ask the policy on what plays on their TVs. When I said the reason for my question was because of the type of programming I just described above, the manager - Priscilla - refused to look me in the eye, never stopped playing with something on her desktop computer, and responded "Oh, well I don't think they're from the devil." When I said that my concern was not about personal beliefs of staff but about whether there was a policy about promoting religions viewpoints or whether LA Fitness as a corporation was indeed okay with that rhetoric, she said "This is my club. I put on whatever people ask for as long as there's no curse words, nudity or anything offensive." When I said that in that case, as a member I was requesting that religions programming be avoided in the future, the manager rolled her eyes and said "I never saw them talking about that stuff on there." Again, I was amazed that the actual POINT of my concern was being ignored and I was amazed, once I met the manager, that of every staff member I've interacted with at that club in several years, she was the most unprofessional. She was down right rude to me. I am soft-spoken, calm college professor...my question of TV policies and LA Fitness values was calm, polite, and totally professional but Priscilla's response was pretty disappointing. Having dealt with her, I'm actually baffled that the rest of the staff are so polite.
In the end, my question is what LA Fitness's actual policy is on TV usage or, more importantly, the promoting of specific religions and religious beliefs within their facilities. My second concern is the lack of professionalism and basic customer service of that location's manager, Priscilla.
