First time eating at MM. A friend and I shared the French toast and a Peruvian dish of peppers, exotic spices and a cheese cap (not quite sure what cheese, perhaps mozzarella). Disparate choices, I know, but my friend was treating, so I wasn't going to object. The food was a bit slow to arrive, but my friend and I weren't in a rush.
I'm predominantly on the Paleo diet, but allow for treats such as butter and real bread every now and then. The bread carried the batter well-- soft enough to be cut with only a fork, but not at all mushy. The syrup and butter were properly proportioned as well. There were a total of two slices of toast, both halved. While it's some of the best French toast I've had, there was nothing so mind-blowing about it to warrant a price tag of $8. That said, MM is known for quality, seasonal, local, organic ingredients; I'm willing to shell out a couple of dollars more knowing this. The Peruvian dish, whose name and specific ingredients escape me (it's not up on their website right now) was tasty as well. There was a small serving of greens and some delicious artisan bread accompanying the red, saucy dish. I believe this was $8, too, and lacking any meat protein, I again find this price to be a bit on the steep side. I'm not sure if it was French press or not, but I had three cups of some of the best hot coffee in Pittsburgh. (Big Dog in the South Side still takes the cake in my book. They brew Intelligentsia.)
The service was prompt and friendly. I love the layout and location of MM. It was a warm, sunny morning. There weren't too many empty tables in the café area, but it wasn't crowded or noisy. If I find myself in the Strip District for a quick breakfast, brunch, or lunch, I would give MM serious consideration.
