  • I played Desert Pines on a recent trip to Las Vegas. I was looking for something close to the strip, and this course fits the bill. Given that it was August, I wanted to play a little early to avoid the heat so a short drive was a plus. I arrived about 20 minutes before my 8:30 tee time. There was not much going on at the course. There were a few locals playing from the 9th to the 10th, but other than that, the place looked very quiet. The folks in the pro shop were nice enough. I bypassed the bag drop when I drove in because no one was there and the area has a reputation of being kind of sketchy. While I was checking in, one of the staff ran out and put my bag on a card. The driving range is two level, with artificial mats and several target flags. Balls were included with the greens fee. I saw another guy waiting around the clubhouse and asked if he was playing. We hooked up for our round. With very few other groups on the course, we played in much less than 4 hours. We didn't really see anyone until we got to the 18th tee and had to wait a few minutes. The course was in excellent condition particularly if you consider it was the middle of August in the desert. It was playing very soft, meaning not much roll in the fairway and approach shots that stopped on a dime. I'd hate to pay their water bill! We played the white tees which are under 6,000 yards. However, the course is built on a small piece of land and fairways are very narrow. Not much need to hit driver on many holes. I didn't stop in the bar/restaurant. We saw the cart girl 3 times during our round which was a plus given the heat. The place met my expectations. It was close to the Strip, was in very good condition and was a good, though tight layout. Given all the positives, it rates 4 stars from me.
