| - The Naaco Truck offers an aromatic and tasty interpretation of traditional Indian food in a street taco format featuring the famous naan flatbread in place of the tortilla. The truck is festively coloured with playful graphics including a caricature of Chef owner Aman Adatia himself. The truck itself is LEAF certified - the first food truck in North America with this certification that adheres to key areas of environmental sustainability.
The "Naaco" is a colourful assemblage of locally sourced naan, fresh local greens with a choice of rich and savoury butter chicken, spicy beef vindaloo, braised pork with ponch-poran (Indian 5-spice) or fried chickpea patty (Aman's version of a popular Indian veggie sandwich, the pav bhaji). The whole thing is finished with brightly coloured candied fennel seeds, yogurt and homemade chutneys. For a few bucks extra, you can make your Naaco a combo and have the crispy and hearty mogo chips - fried cassava with your choice of salts that you can season yourself.
My favourite Naacos thus far have to be the Beef Vindaloo, since I am a fan of spice and the texturally epic Bodacious Bhaji (chickpea patties). The butter chicken and "Ponchy Pig" are also very good, notably the latter since pork is rarely seen on Indian menus. I have to admit that I do love traditional Indian food as well, but the textures of curry and rice, dal and rice, etc start to resemble baby food. Aman's creations are both exciting to look at and an adventure to eat. They are hearty and messy, so get extra napkins, roll up your sleeves and practice the proper street taco posture.
The Naaco Truck is definitely a new take on Indian cuisine, with its handheld format and the variety of visually tempting colours and ingredients. Having locally sourced ingredients makes a huge difference in the flavour and as well will guarantee that Aman will have some surprises in store once the seasons change.
*UPDATE 2013
Aman and Stephanie are back from a 4 month stint in India and the UK. With fresh inspiration and brand new recipes, they are back for another great season of Naaco love. Though the classic Naacos are still on the menu, Aman also has brought us a new offering in his Naaco Tacos - a brand new beef vindaloo, inspired by his travels in a smaller, more traditional taco in fresh corn tortillas. Topped with his signature slaw, a cool and refreshing yogurt chutney and fresh feta, these shareable tacos come 3 to an order and are top drawer.
Also on the menu are Naaco's take on the humble salt & pepper wings. Very straight-forward, they are meaty Sunworks chicken wings, seasoned with salt and housemade garam masala. Served with a side salad, they're a great addition to the menu.
The menu changes often with all the fresh offerings throughout the season, so the fun of dining with Naaco is discovering what new eats await.
