| - Having lived in Scottsdale since 1988, this place has been a staple of mine for years. It seems that in the last year the place is falling apart from the inside.
With some family in town we decided to try it again. It had been about nine months since our last visit. During that last visit the service was so bad we wrote the place off. This current visit made us run for the proverbial hills. We will not return short of EVERY other Mexican restaurant within the 500 mile radius closing.
We got there on a busy Saturday around 5:30pm and just beat the crowd. They said the patio had a 45 minute wait even though more than half of the tables were empty. We asked if they were waiting for reservations on the empty tables, we were told they don't take reservations. As we sat there, two different people walked up the hostess and asked if he could find their waiters. All signs we should have caught.
After waiting 20 minutes, I walked around the to the front and found the inside of the place almost 100% empty. I asked the host inside if the tables were open and he said yes. Okay, no mention of the 10 open seats inside to anyone waiting on the patio. So we moved inside along with about 3/4th of the people waiting with us outside.
After we sat nobody came to the table for a good 10 minutes. We had to grab someone. After we did, it took another 5 minutes before they made it to the table. You could see why sitting there. They had two waiters for the entire inside. OK, the inside it small and it would probably work if the two poor guys didn't have to cover the bar, that had no bartender, and make drinks for their tables AND for the bar, in-between serving. This all going on while the hostess stood in place and never lent hand.
The only time I saw him doing anything was then two irate people from different tables berated him about their lack of service. Two more tables around us didn't waste their breath and just got up and left.
Our waiter came back once, about 20 minutes after we got there and took our food order. Our drinks were dry and chip basket was empty. No refills, no chips. He didn't even inquire about us wanting more.
20 minutes later our food came from a different server/runner and we never talked to our waiter again.
We then couldn't get our bill for anything. Personally, I would have just got up and left but the other people didn't want to pull a 'dine and dash'.
The last thing I'll mention is the filth. I make it a general practice to not try to look at the state of the Mexican places I go to, especially the kitchens, but at this one the grossness just jumped out. I won't go into details, but I stopped eating my burrito about half way though after seeing the kitchen door being held open by an employee for a few seconds.
It's a shame. This place was a gem in Old Town and I recommended it many times. It seems the times have passed it by. While the staff works their under-staffed butts off, the management has obviously given up and the place is being run into the ground. I see a Kitchen Nightmares in it's future.
Consider yourself warned.
