| - I'm a hopeless chef groupie. With so many big names in Vegas, I finally settled on Fleur for our big ticket dinner.
The desserts alone deserve five stars. That said...
I'm an insanely picky eater. I clearly don't have the tastes or palate for super fine dining. We got the tasting menu for $135 (for two people, pretty reasonable). The first course was the wagyu carpaccio and ahi tuna tacos. I bit into the carpaccio and got a big mouth full of carrot. I *hate* carrots. That killed it for me. The tuna tacos were good even if they were only 2 bites.
The second course was bone marrow and onion soup. The only meat I consume regularly is white meat chicken and ground beef. So you want me to eat the innards of a bone from an unknown animal? No thank you. In the spirit of pushing my boundaries, I tried it anyway. And literally gagged when I put it in my mouth. The texture was like a squishy scallop. Ew. The onion soup was very tasty. I would eat that again.
The third course was grilled octopus and spicy shrimp and grits. The grits were a little smoother than I'm used to, but had a good flavor. The shrimp were spicy without being overwhelming. I tried a few bites of the octopus. It wasn't chewy, but also wasn't my speed. Boy dug into it quite happily, but he's pretty much my polar opposite. The list of things he won't eat is very, very short.
The fourth course was skirt steak and mac & cheese with shrimp & lobster sauce. I was super excited for the mac & cheese. It ended up being way, way too fishy tasting for me. If it had just been shrimp or lobster, it would've been fine. The end product fell short. Say what you will about proper steak cookery, but I like mine dead and deep fried. This one was still mooing. Again, Boy was all over it. Now to the fabled desserts.
The dessert on the tasting menu was the beignets. We added the creme brulee because I love creme brulee. It was definitely worth the extra $10. The beignets were surprisingly light and not doughy. There wasn't too much sugar on them either. The creme brulee was wonderful. It was another case of for the sake of the relationship, we'll share the last bite.
Had it not been for the desserts, I probably would've given the whole experience 2-3 stars. Thank you, dessert.
