  • I went tonight (11/28/2012), and it was my first experience at this restaurant, though I've repeatedly eaten at Union Pig and Chicken, the other restaurant created by the owner. The food at Salt was on the pricey end, but tasty; the scallop starter was delicious, caramelized edges of the scallops light and savory on the tongue. I chose the short ribs as my entree, and it was mouthwatering. The wild mushrooms and potatoes that came with it were excellent, a flavor I am going to be trying to recreate at home. My companions had the scallop dinner (large scallops as opposed to the bay scallops in the starter), and it was perfectly cooked (though we had some minor quibbles with the 'marmalade' it was seated in, which was actually more like an orangey cream sauce and jarred slightly with the flavor) and the pork, which was interestingly spiced and perfectly cooked, tender without being watery. The ambiance, as with Union Pig and Chicken, is almost nonexistent: no menus, and as our waiter shortly informed us we could either crane our necks to scan the slightly-too-shiny chalkboard that took up one wall, or "*If you HAVE* a smartphone, you can look it up there." A bit taken aback by his attitude, we did so. It's neat to be able to see the kitchen in action, though I wonder if that's hard on the cooks, being both hardworking at their trade and also the evening's entertainment for those sitting at the bar? My group of three sat at one of the long trestle tables, on simple wooden crate-style stools. Nothing wasted in the design, but I liked that. The service was really pretty bad. My waiter, a sneering white guy with short and thinning blond hair, was brusque and impolite, dropping my silverware rather than setting it down, not even attempting to smile at me. I'm really polite to wait staff! I know it's a hard job. But he seemed to take one look at me (I'm betting it was my green hair, as I was dressed nicely enough) and decide to wash his hands of me entirely. His attitude really detracted from my experience. Which was his loss in the end, honestly. I'm a 30-percent-tipper when the service is good; and Salt is not inexpensive. He missed out. Edit: I have to say that the waiter's friends are doing him no service, nor do they reflect well on him, by emailing me such hateful things.
