I stopped into Barrio on my recent trip to Phoenix after reading numerous raving reviews from "Best Mexican in the US" lists. I chose the skinny margarita, which I loved and decided to have two. Since it was my first, and perhaps only time, I chose the pork in banana leaf for my entree, or the Cochinita Pibil. The pork is marinated in achiote and sour orange, and then slow roasted in a banana leaf. The meal can be shared, and it is served with fresh warm corn tortillas that were the perfect accompaniment, along with some Mexican zucchini squash.
There were so many things I wanted to try on the menu, so I definitely would love to return soon. If you're looking for Mexican cooking that is creative and not just the traditional offerings, this is the place for gourmet in a reasonable casual atmosphere with very warm service.
