  • Stepping into the Great Dane's Hilldale location, you'll feel like you've been here before. That's because you have. It's got the same giant bar with the beer names engraved in wood, the same mahogany booths, and when you sit down you'll find the same menu. And that's fine. When you've got a great thing, keep it going. I love their beer. The Scotch is my favorite, but while trying out the this location I had the Wheat. When I want a burger, the Great Dane is usually the place I think of. However, this last time I tried the Sustain-A-Burger made from all local ingredients, and I was disappointed. My experience with local products is that they're just more flavorful, but nothing on this burger stood out. Next time I'll just go back to the Dane. So what sets it apart? I've found it easier to get seating at dinner time than the other Great Danes. And, oddly, the patio seating overlooking the Hilldale parking lot and Sundance is a great people watching perch. The real reason to go here is convenience. If you live on the west side of Madison, this is much easier than driving to Fitchburg and definitely easier to park nearby than downtown.
