  • Reading down the list, it seems that my I have many common views of this Fry's store with many of my fellow Yelpers. It is sadly very true that the staggering selection of merchandise and occasional good deals is offset by the horrible inconsistency that you get from the employees, being herded into the Cattle Pen at the checkout line and the mild ignominy of the Frisking at teh exit doors. Having had to purchase items here regularly in the past as part of my job, I've since learned that a little prior research online goes a LONG way. If you have to depend on the minimum-wage hack who operates on commission to tell you which device is best for your home or business, naturally they all have a researched spiel to entice you into purchasing the most expensive choice. Or get the mid-tier, but get a "replacement warranty" for it. I used to work as both software sales and vendor liason, and they hammer this into your heads at the very beginning of your shift. Now, my intention is not to make life difficult for the informed and hard-working shift members at this location, but rather to emphasize the value of research. That's why you have your CNET, your Newegg, your Tiger Direct, and many other informative sites IN ADDITION TO the actual Fry's website (www.frys.com) that will allow you to price- and feature-match, compare models, and take down SKU#s. NOTE: Having the actual item SKU in hand also protects you from lazy BS from the associate who says "they cannot sell it at this price because that's a web-only special and this computer doesn't connect to the internet so there's no way we can check." That's when you turn around and, depending on your level of patience, either get a store manager and present the evidence or simply leave. Another thing I dislike about Fry's is, like so many of you have mentioned, the size and massive selection at this store can be downright intimidating. It also makes for a very impersonal and confusing experience. I was looking for a set of Shure earphones just the last time I was there, and they were located in two different areas. One in an aisle back by the blaring car stereo demos, one in an endcap right before you get into the home theater section. Same product, different pricing, different areas. WTF, right? Had I not known it was the exact same product, an enterprising salesperson could have sold me on the virtues of the more expensive one -- "Sir, you'd be smart to pay $25 extra for the BOX instead of this PLASTIC packaging. Why, you ask? Well.....it will protect your investment better! Now let me tell you about our replacement plans....." But no one came to help me. And I was damn near cavity searched at the door, because apparently some kid had jacked some PS3 games by sticking it in a similar box he had brought in to "return", only to turn right back around once he had secured the gear. Or so they said. Hmm. BOTTOM LINE: Do your research online before coming in. Don't come on weekends, unless you dig lines. Don't come on Black Friday, unless you dig riots.
