I hate haggling over price. I know that this is expected when you go to a flea market, but I expect that things will be priced clearly and fairly at brick and mortar stores.
This is a huge consignment store. Most consignment stores I have visited will have price tags on the item. This store has 6 digit number on the tag. You then go to an electronic kiosk and type in the number and a photo and description pops up on the screen along with a price. I knew I was in trouble when the employee orienting me to this complex process tells me that items that come up at less than $20 are the actual price, but that anything over $20 and you are supposed to hunt down an employee and have them submit a bid on the item. They then communicate with the seller (allow 10 minutes for each bid) and see if the seller wants to make a counter offer and so forth.
I browsed the stuff in the store. Most was garage sale type items. I did find a nice wheel chair in good condition for my husband. I went to the kiosk and saw that the asking price was $249. I had thought it was worth about $50 used. I'm thinking that it would take at least 4 bids and counter offers to come to a price that was acceptable. Allow at least 10 minutes for each exchange, that would take a minimum of 40 minutes to buy one used product. Jeesh!
I left the store empty handed.
