  • Sound Academy is one of those venues where I will pass on events based on the fact that I do not want to make the trip to Polson Pier. For those without a car there's not really a good way to get here and I tend to find myself just taking the subway to Union and either walking or grabbing a cab. You might not want to grab a cab to get back to the city, as I took one to Bathurst and College and cost me over 20 bones. The venue is notorious for bad sound, which is funny considering the place is called Sound Academy. They might need to go back to Sound College and get some tips. Anyway, the sound here isn't anything special and being a warehouse style the waves just bounce off concrete walls. Certainly not an intimate venue, hence a lot of big name acts dropping by. Was here last night and the men's washrooms STUNK so badly. They smelled just as bad as port-a-potties at an outdoor event. There is absolutely no reason for this! They had about 40 urinals and one hand dryer. Do the math. Outside there's another bar shaped sort of like a hut. They also had a burger shop to the side where you can get sandwiches, fries, poutine and junk like that. I was starving and wanted to eat something before I started drinking so I ordered "chicken tenders" which took 20 minutes to make and were basically nothing more than 4 strips of breaded chicken and some fries. 10 bucks later I was disappointed with my purchase and was still hungry. The bartender I had outside was super nice and sweet. And I will say they had tall cans of Big Wheel and Amsterdam for 6 dollars. This is definitely a plus for me because I drink beer like water. I still hate making the trek to Sound Academy, but there are certain shows that are going to crop up here that I have no choice but to cave into. I have to admit I've not been to Sound Academy since a Public Enemy show a few years back and it's not as bad as I recalled. I think I would pick this venue over the Koolhaus just because it actually has a venue feel to it, whereas the Koolhaus is nothing more than an empty concrete wasteland. I'll just have to make sure to bring nose plugs for when I have to wee.
