  • Oh, Jaleo... you are great for people watching... At the table in front of us was what looked to be a call girl and her customer for the evening. We spent some time trying to decide if she was of the "high end" variety and decided that she was not. She definitely looked bored. To our right was a man in his 40s and a guy in his 20s and a guy who looked to be in his teens. We spent the majority of our evening trying to determine the relationship here - was it a love triangle? Was he their gigolo? Who knows.. but that's what makes Vegas fun. Other than that you had the typical bachelor party, a table with 20 dudes, and a table of 4 women in their 40s clearly trying to relive their youth. We chose Jaleo because we were planning to go to Marquee after dinner and they are both located in the Cosmopolitan Hotel. We called from the pool earlier in the afternoon and were told that a table for 4 wouldn't be available until 9:45 pm. It seemed late, but we decided to show up at 9 pm and have a drink at the bar and hope the table opened up sooner, which it did (small tip). From what I can remember, this is what we ordered: Croquetas de pollo - Traditional chicken fritters Mejillones en escabeche - Mussels marinated in Sherry vinegar Chorizo Palacios - A slightly spicy cured pork sausage seasoned with pimentón and garlic Patatas bravas - A Jaleo favorite with spicy tomato sauce and alioli Canelones tradicionales de cerdo y hígado de pato con salsa bechamel - Pork and foie gras canelones with bechamel sauce Mejillones al Vapor - Steamed mussels with bay leaf, lemon and olive oil Fricandó de carilleras de ternera y puré de patatas al aceite de oliva - Veal cheeks and morels with olive oil potato purée Carne asada con piquillos Julián - de Lodosa - Grilled skirt steak with piquillo pepper confit Everything was pretty good, but nothing stands out as outstanding enough that I would say that you must order it. The Patatas Bravas were - to warn you - just seasoned potato chips. I chose the Canelones tradicionales de cerdo y hígado de pato con salsa bechamel because of the "foie gras" component (you may or may not know that it is illegal in California and I needed my fix) but you couldn't even tell there was foie gras in there, which was disappointing for me. Food was good, not great, and pricing is what you would expect for a restaurant in the Cosmopolitan (overpriced but at the same time, reasonably priced for where you are). Not a bad choice, but not the best one.
