  • We stayed at the Golden Nugget for a golf outing in November. The hotel is in the older, downtown section of Las Vegas, a ways from the strip. Our room was in the Gold Tower. These rooms appear to be recently remodeled. The room was pretty spacious. The bathroom is a little small, with only one sink. But overall, this room was very nice. The pool area features a large shark tank with a water slide that goes through the tank. They also have live gaming tables in the pool area. Obviously, in November the pool was not getting much action. My only problem with the pool is that is surrounded by the hotel towers and does not get much direct sun. This may be a blessing during the summer, but won't provide much of an opportunity to get some sun. There is also a smaller party pool near the Rush tower that has multiple cabanas and a small infinity pool. The casino is somewhat standard for Vegas, but seemed a bit cramped and smoky. They may have been managing the number of dealers, but it seemed hard to find a blackjack table with many open seats. As opposed to the hotels on the strip that have famous chefs anchoring their hotels, the Nugget has brand-name restaurants, including a Chart House and Claim Jumper. Neither of these were bad, but it wasn't the dining experience you'd get on the strip. The hotel opens to the Fremont Street experience. The street has a cover that allows projection of video and periodic shows. They also have a zip line. But the real show is the street entertainers trying to earn a buck. It is worth grabbing a drink and walking (which is legal) up and down Fremont just to take it all in. While the Golden Nugget may be the best hotel downtown, it really lacks the best stuff of the strip. Three stars from me.
