  • I've heard about Holstein's via reviews on social media for about the past year, and finally tried the place with a friend last night. The environment, food & service was good, but I do not understand what the buzz & rave reviews are about! We arrived at about 9PM on a Wednesday & were promptly seated in the restaurant section (we could have sat in the bar or lounge area, but both were a little too noisy for us). I ordered a chocolate milkshake ($9) the "Urth" burger ($13) plus cheddar cheese ($2), mushrooms ($2) & grilled onions ($2) and for an extra $2 I could upgrade from fries to onion rings, so I did that as well. My friend ordered the Executive burger, cooked medium, and a water. Service was good -- not great, not bad, but OK/good. Ambiance -- casual attire by both guests as well as waitstaff, a little artsy architecture, numerous TVs on the walls. Nothing pretentious, nor elegant. Food -- My $9 chocolate shake didn't taste any different than a McDonalds chocolate shake, other than that it came with some whipped cream on the top (sorry, no cherry) & a little extra in a metal cup, old-school style. My burger was great, but $19 great? Absolutely not. I could have loaded-up at 5 Guys or In & Out burger and been just as happy with my burger, for a lot less $. As for the onion rings, they were good, but not great, and on-par with a fresh order of onion rings you might get from Burger King! My friend said his burger was good (not great...) despite it clearly being medium-rare, not the medium he ordered. Total bill came to $50, + $10 tip = $60 for two, no alcohol & my friend just drinking water. I realize Holstein's is in the Cosmopolitan & probably pays a lot of rent, but to the customer, that fact alone shouldn't justify the high prices -- better quality, better service, better interior design are needed there. Am I glad I finally got around to trying Holstein's? Sure! Will I go back? Only if friends want to try it, but I'll try steering them elsewhere first. We will certainly wander around the Cosmo and be awed by the high-class, sometimes ostentatious scenery, but if we're not on some sort of expense account, we'll go elsewhere for dinner. Prices are the same or slightly higher at BurGR in Planet Hollywood but the service, atmosphere, & quality (such as the house-made buns & ketchup) are much better.
