  • PHX isn't my favorite airport, but I think that it makes the best out of older facilities and somewhat outdated mechanisms. I've flown out of Sky Harbor countless times (with countless times to come) since moving to Phoenix, and I've haunted all four terminals. There are quite a few renovations happening that may be revamping some of my concerns, so I'll look forward to potentially updating my review in the coming years. The terminals of the airport can be confusing, especially as there are North and South doors. There are also irregularly irregular merges from highways, parking lots, and different terminals. There's no rhyme or reason to any of the merges, and I can't count the number of times I've almost seen an accident because a car merged into a lane out of nowhere. Speaking of merging, there don't seem to be any arrows signifying that a lane is merging, which can be confusing for both sides. Terminal 4 seems to be the nightmare terminal, and it's always busy with long lines, insane wait times, and full parking. The security guards do a decent job of ushering people along, and there don't seem to be too many people who just sit around waiting in their cars. The cellphone lot has such a weird mechanism of going in and out that many drivers find it confusing because it's one way for half the lot, then strangely turns around to being another direction. The inside of the airport is also somewhat frustrating. The upstairs before entering the gates has decent food options, but once inside, the pickings are slim. The seats outside of the gates are very minimal and uncomfortable, and I don't think they've been updated for decades. There are also random inclines and declines in perfectly normal walkways, which I find somewhat precarious. I've been to over twenty airports around the country, and I've never seen another airport with such strange design. Perhaps it was an oversight in the architecture of the second floor? During non-peak holiday times though, PHX security is generally pretty painless and quick. During peak holiday times, it's a nightmare as is expected.
