  • i wanted to write a positive Yelp review. i mean, i've had good experiences with different places but tend to write only product reviews on amazon unless concern about a service performed drives me to Yelp to see what's up. i like accessing the reviews here so wanted to give someone/someplace some good feedback for a change. a good experience follows: in january 2012, severely anemic, i was referred to dr. kantala at ironwood cancer treatment center in the east mesa banner hospital area. it just so happened that two decorators had gushing comments about the place before i ever went there, one of whom was previously a surgical nurse, so i walked in feeling good about the place. walking in to this center can be intimidating, because they have a big parking lot and a huge waiting room that is often packed. in spite of that, there is hardly any wait time. at least, there was hardly any wait time in 2012-2013. the staff was always courteous, and patients in the waiting room were never complaining. i had to go there frequemtly at first, and then periodically later on. dr. kantala: was always unbelievably timely, not in a hurry, very sweet, always caring in his manner, and he used ways of describing blood processes that helped me understand what was going on. i am not a huge fan of doctors or western medicine generally, but i cannot fault this place in any way. they took good care of me and were always dependable and understanding. the doctor was perfect and i would go to him again in a second. everyone expects you to have a regular doctor, which of course i didn't, and i really wanted him to function as a general practitioner for me, but he couldn't because he is a specialist. at that time, i was REALLY against western medicine, and he didn't agree with my views, but he didn't mock them, either (as the older female nurse practioner in florence who referred me to him had just done), and he even adjusted his treatment protocols somewhat to accommodate my ambivalence. since the day i was referred to dr. kantala, i have needed doctors a handful of times and have benefited from western medicine more than once, probably four times. it is easy to diss a profession when you have no apparent need for it. it was as recent as a couple of weeks ago that a general practitioner who i have now gone to three times and really like helped me with an accurate diagnosis, so at nearly 60, i now have someone to list as a regular doctor for the first time in my adult life. there really IS a middleground between western medicine, ayurvedic and traditional chinese medicines, and energy healing modalities. they needn't function independently and exclude each other.
