| - Location: On the busy Avenue du Parc, north of Fairmount. Street parking available but good luck finding a spot!
The place: I'd been out art hunting since 8 a.m. so by the time 11 a.m. rolled around, I was ready to refuel. Since I didn't want to go somewhere I've already been, I asked the Yelp what was nearby and these guys popped up. Now, it's easily missed (I walked right past it) so look for the blue awning - you'll be heading down the stairs. The space is tiny. I mean, really small - I'd say there are maybe, 10 tables. As luck would have it, it wasn't full when I arrived so getting a table wasn't a problem. I'd say that if you plan to brunch with a group, you best call ahead to make a reservation. In terms of decor, it's kind of like being in someone's cozy kitchen - for me, it reminded me of my grandmother. I don't know why - it just did. Simple decor, warm and inviting. The tables are a little close together so keep that in mind if you have an issue with personal space.
The goods: The menu is very small; they offer 5-6 entrées and 5-6 main dishes. I was pleasantly surprised when they brought fresh corn muffins to my table - complimentary, to boot! I found these to be quite good, but sadly only ate one of the two because they were quite big. I skipped the entrée and ordered a Macchiato and the cheese omelet (note: I usually avoid cheese due to a sensitivity to lactose). The omelet was delicious and despite the obvious (generous) presence of cheese, it was light and I had no tummy issues when I was done. Yay! The omelet came with crispy potato wedges and I ordered a side of bacon. The wedges were very crispy on the outside and tender inside - I would have liked a bit more seasoning or salt but otherwise, zero complaints. The bacon was OK - while I did ask for it to be crispy, I found it a bit dry. All in all, this was a very healthy portion and left me satisfied. Where I was less enthralled, was the coffee situation. I was basically served an espresso with foam on top. Umm, no. I took the foam off because well, I don't like foam, and when the waitress asked if there was an issue, I just mentioned that a Macchiato has milk. She seemed a little confused when I asked for milk or cream - I'm not sure if she was unfamiliar with how to prepare a Macchiato or if she thought my coffee already had milk but anyway, she kindly brought cream. Unfortunately, the coffee was too bitter and cold when everything was said and done. So.... stick to regular coffee.
Service: Good.
Price point: $21 tax in. It's a little expensive for brunch but if I'd only ordered the main, it would have run me $12 which is fair. That said, I think they should have comped me for the coffee, since the cup was obviously full when they cleared the table.
Great little find - check it out!
