I went into Bake Island early in the day when they just opened. They were still filling their cases with buns and pastries at that time but we knew everything was fresh.
The store is very clean and organized. I like how they had a little "hot" section for some of the buns that should be eaten warmed. They had a case by the cashier filled with some cakes that you could buy by the piece or as a whole. They also offered some bubble tea drinks and as well as your typical asian tea drinks (milk tea, half & half, lemon tea, etc).
I ended up getting 5 buns and a milk tea. Since we went when they just opened the buns were still nice and warm when we ate them. I got the following:
Shredded Pork Pastry Bun - I really enjoyed this bun, it was filled with pork floss and had a nice flakey pastry bun. It had the sweet and savoury flavour of your typical asian pastry buns.
Taiwan Bun - I ended up eating this one a few hours later and it had dried out a bit. Its similar to the traditional pineapple bun but the crust was not as buttery and flakey. I wasn't really a fan of this one, the bun was a little too dense but it could have been because it was a bit dried out. It might have tasted better if I had warmed it up perhaps.
Hong Kong Crispy Bun - Also similar to the pineapple bun but a much more crispy top. It was my favourite one. I liked the crispy sweetness with the nice soft and warm bun.
Black Sesame Bun - The black sesame filling was really good and not overly sweet. I wasn't sure what the topping on the bun was and to be honest it didn't do much for the bun. It was very messy to eat due to the topping breaking apart into a powdery mess.
Sausage Bread - Saw this being brought out from the kitchen so had to get it. It was in the "hot" warming section. Reminded me of the typical chinese hot dog bun, but this one had some cheese and ketchup on it which gave it some added flavour. I really enjoyed it. It had the nice sweet and savoury flavour and the bread was soft and warm.
They had a really good variety of buns, cakes and pastries. I think there's something for everyone. I thoroughly enjoyed them but the price is a little high, although given it's location I understand why. I would still say it's worth it given their variety and the fact that they have more unique buns than the typical ones in Chinatown. Overall I'd definitely go back to try out the other buns and cakes as well!
