  • I wasn't sure what to expect by some of the mixed reviews, but was anxious to make my first trip here. Boy am I glad I checked it out! I buy both CDs and Records and my daughter loves vinyl. I was shocked by the amount of New Vinyl that is available. They had everything from Adele to ZZ Top and everything in between. There was even quite a bit of Jazz and Reggae which you never seem to find. My daughter grabbed a copy of the new David Bowie, which every other store was out of, and a Tame Impala record. I grabbed a Trojan Records Reggae compilation of rocksteady stuff and a MFSL Original Master Recording or Bob Dylan. Just for fun, my daughter checked the prices against Amazon.com and 2 were the same price and 2 the Music Mine had cheaper! I talked with the man at the counter and he explained that it is normal to match or out price Amazon on vinyl because of the shipping costs to Amazon. Apparently from being in business here for 20+ years, Dave's has buying direct from the labels grandfathered in to his business. He also told me that they do a lot of special ordering and the prices are the same as if it was in stock. So I ordered an All Them Witches record for my daughter that he said would be in on Friday, it was Monday evening when I ordered. The CD selection is a mix of everything, new and used, with used prices for most of the bands I was looking for between $3 & $4. They also had tons of DVDs for around $2 - $4. I flipped through the used vinyl. They have the best sellers and new arrivals in racks on the main floor and catalog stuff in the basement. Yep, there is a basement full of uaed vinyl too! In the new arrivals I picked up a Commander Cody, Derek & The Dominos and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young as well as a temptations 3 record Anthology (only $9). I asked about Beatles records and they told me they had them new for around $20 but that you had to be here at the right time for stuff like Beatles, Hendrix, Zappa Etc... used because when they go out they don't usually stick around more than a day. They also told me that they prefer not to sell on ebay, so they usually put some auction quality records out in the new arrivals for a little less than they would get online. He had a copy of Zappa's Joe's Garage for $20 in great condition. I would have bought it if I didn't already have it. My daughter has already asked if she can come when I pick up her record this weekend, so I think we found a winner. There was another group of college girls looking at records when we were there so I'm glad I came and I'm starting to understand why Dave's has won Best Record Store in the Pittsburgh City Paper for many years in a row - Variety, Customer Service & Prices.
