| - Tom seems honest. However, the lack of communication between him and the workers in the shop this summer (2017) was absurd. It's never been great in past years, but because of our most recent experience, we decided to find another shop.
Our routine maintenance was done just fine in 1 visit, but we did not get a call when it was done. We called the next day to discover it had been ready the day before.
Our repair took 3 visits (originally a bad part on our end so that was not their fault), but also scheduling miscommunication on their end. So-and-so said, "Tom will have to handle this, bring it back Wednesday." We did. Tom was there, but had no idea what we were talking about. Since he didn't, we would have to come back Saturday when so-and-so was in (since so-and-so had worked on it, promised Tom would handle, yet left no documentation for Tom). The initial repair was finally completed, but the car was still making noise. (At a later visit, Tom told us we should probably just live with the noise, because it wasn't worth taking it all apart and charging us so much more. We agreed.)
The check engine light came on in the middle of all this for a totally unrelated issue. We were told they'd taken care of the new issue and discovered we weren't charged extra at pick up. The next day, the light was back on. After bringing the car back mid-week, they "fixed it" and we got a call to come pick it up. The check engine light came on while still parked in their lot! Though we'd been dropped off after hours to pick up, so again, we would have to return. When we called, we were told to bring the car back Saturday. When we did, it was afternoon--the earliest we could possibly get there as our newborn was very ill. We were told to bring it back next weekend because "the guys are ready to go home." Again, no appointment made, just "bring it back next weekend." The next weekend we brought it back, Tom was there. He remembered us and what was going on. He personally came out to run the check engine code, and made the decision that the gas cap just wasn't tight enough. He showed us how to tighten it, turned off the check engine light, and sent us on our way with a handshake. Within days it was back on again. Since this "fix" was not the solution and was neither communicated or written it down in our file somewhere, it seems they all must have done the same thing...just tried a quick fix and turned off the light.
I know summers are busy and they run a busy shop, but c'mon.
So, if you don't have a busy schedule, don't have a hard time dropping a car off, don't mind the frustration of calling/visiting several times to get to the bottom of an issue with more than one person, then this is not a bad shop. For our family and circumstances right now, it's not a good fit.
