  • I have been a patient here for 10 yrs and up until now I have only needed a yearly well women check. I had a few weird occurances- once was told I had a lump in my breast (I was a 34b at the time, so should have been obvious) and when I got my ultrasound they couldn't find anything and had no clue what my Dr was talking about. Then another time I got a pap smear done but the Dr didnt get enough sample to run the test and so I had to go back, then she did it again and had to go back a 3rd time! They tried to bill me for all 3x and I had to argue to get them to take the extra charges off for their mistake. Then this year, I have been expieriencing infertility after trying for a year and having no luck, so I decided to bring it up in Feb for my annual. I told her my struggle and advocated that I get a full thyroid pannel test done but felt like she only ordered it because I told her I was a RN. She offered to test my husband as well, but nothing else because I was "young" and had regular cycles. Doesn't take a genius to figure out that there can be major hormone imbalances even with a regular cycle! At the end of the appt she asked me if I wanted more birth control- ummmm no I just told you I was trying for a baby!! When they called me about my test results at first all the triage nurse said was that my pap was normal. Ok cool, its always normal what about my thyroid? She had no idea what I was talking about then came back and said it was "normal." As a RN I know those tests come back as a number, not normal/abnormal which I thought was strange. So after getting my hubs tested at a fertility clinic we made a follow up appt with a different VWFW provider to go over the results. I thought they would be able to help us, but basically told us there was nothing they could do because I was having regular cycles and the only other test they could order was an HSG to make sure my tubes werent blocked. Back to the fertility clinic I went. Once I made a new pt appt and spoke with the fertility specialist (New Directions Fertility Center- love them!), he said that my thyroid was indeed off and I needed to be put on thyroid meds right away. Again, it doesnt take more than a simple google search to find that for fertility purposes, your TSH needs to be even lower between 1-2. How come VWFW doesn't seem to understand that? Many infertile women I've spoke with had much different expieriences at their regular OB. I truly feel like at VWFW if you are not pregnant, they don't care about you. Once I do get pregnant I will not be going back for prenatal care or otherwise. I'm done.
