| - There's a downside to setting up a hotel in a building that's long past its hundredth birthday, but one can't deny that the scene is both majestic and charming. Despite some drawbacks, most of which I chalk up to the age of the structure and facilities, this is a great historic hotel for those who want the best of both worlds (between a modern hotel and a step into the past) at an affordable price point.
The staff members were all friendly, helpful, and professional. The amenities on site were enhanced by the Arcade shopping mall (shops and multiple restaurants, and I found the breakfast offerings at the 1890 restaurant more than adequate), though it was a bit sad to see so many empty storefronts. The arcade itself is impressive, especially considering its age, and coming "home" to such a site certainly added to my long weekend in Cleveland. My room was comfortable and quiet, though my 7th floor location in the attached tower was probably the cause of the "quiet."
A few points that were a bit of a letdown:
-The bed didn't have a fitted sheet, and the frame squeaked a lot. Neither would bother a very still sleeper, but as someone who moves around a bit I found both a little annoying. I'm not sure if either of those choices were for historical accuracy, but I think I'd prefer an anachronism to that level of precision.
-The TV picture was blurry or fuzzy on many channels...another historical recreation perhaps, despite the flatpanel HDTV?
-The hot water in the shower took forever to kick in. Had to let the water run for a while. Probably an "old building" fact of life.
-My room had a pretty sweet soaking tub, but it was very difficult to get in and out of (you had to straddle an uncomfortably wide chunk of tiled shelf/bench to get in, with no useful handrail or fixture to grip for support)
-One of the two bedside lamps couldn't turn on unless one of the overhead lights was also switched on (i.e., the same switch that controlled the overhead light also controlled the outlet into which the lamp was plugged). This was pretty sub-optimal, as it meant you couldn't read on that side of the bed and then make the room dark without getting up. At that point, why even have the bedside lamp? That's just bad/thoughtless electrical work.
-The shower's tiny soap dish wasn't even large enough to hold the provided bath amenities (e.g., if I wanted body wash or bar soap in addition to shampoo and conditioner, at least one or two items would have to be on the floor).
All that said, the service, ambiance and convenience (including a fantastic location) would definitely make me happy to return to this hotel should I need another stay in downtown Cleveland.
