Perhaps by big city standards, the Barrick is a modest museum, but programming and exhibitions can transcend "modest" walls, especially when access to the museum is free. The standing exhibitions showcase the museum's pre-Columbian and ethnographic art. Most recently, I saw a vast collection of masks. The multitude of colors and designs were eye-catching and inspiring.
The gallery space delivers quality, visiting exhibitions, from international to regional. The versatility of the space allows the museum to host a wide variety of shows. The museum also provides opportunities for the community to contribute art in a Community Gallery, which regularly showcases themed exhibitions. In addition to visual art, the museum also regularly hosts lectures and the occasional film series.
With all of the programming and outreach efforts (including free coffee Mondays!), it is clear that the Barrick is striving to be a hub for Vegas culturati. These efforts deserve big kudos. Now, if only I could find a place to park!
