| - After a two week fiasco combing many Calgary competitors, I could not find hiking boots Mostly because I am uneducated around how to buy a hiking boot. I have had hiking shoes for a number of years, however, boots have been a more challenging pursuit for me, simply because many of the hiking boots feel similar to ski boots to me (little bending), so I really didn't know how to pick them out.
The Calgary competitors doled out useless advice (I actually had one sales person in a competor tell me to bend the boot iwth my hands, and decide how long I thought it would last. Seriously, I can't even make that up. I even have a witness -- my friend Karri was with me and both of us were blown away by the response of this sales person who knew nothing about hiking.
Then.... Campers Village was recommended to me, and man.... were they helpful! A young hiking dude assisted me with curly hair in a pony tail, and asked me a tonne of questions about what I planned to do (i.e., day trips versus multi-day trips, etc), and then narrowed my selection down to 6 boots. All of them equally as ugly (sorry -- these now won the title of the uglies boots I own). He explained how they should feel on the heel and the toe, and pointed me towards a ramp to walk up and down, and explained how they should feel in each direction. Wow!!! THIS is the kind of help I needed. I would have been pretty frustrated if I spent $200-$300 on a boot, not knowing what I was doing. As I was poking a little fun at the fashion crisis I had going on (black skirt, black tank, a pair of men's sock with the ankle bulging out the top of the back of the boot), he assured me that I needed to let my feet decide which pair I was taking home -- not my eyeballs.
He was right -- out of six pairs of boots, only one pair cut the mustard on all of criteria he laid out when I was walking on that little ramp to feel how they felt on the toe and heel as I walked up and down. He asked if I wanted to purchase the socks that were on my feet in my own size. He was so bloody helpful, I took the upsell and walked out with some Merino Wool hiking socks. Well done, dude.
I am sure you can buy similar products at any outdoor store, but Campers Village gets a huge thumbs up from me for service. This guy that helped me knew his stuff and helped me narrow down a lot of ugly choices to the most functional one. I have every confidence that the boots will do everything that I need them to do in the rockies this summer.
