| - Moving from Pittsburgh to Irwin leaves much to be desired for the vegetarian palette. Double Wide offers plenty of menu items for those who don't want to order the tired grilled cheese and French fries. After a brief overview of the menu, I came to Double Wide for brunch this past weekend with my partner. There were only three other small tables filled when we arrived, so we were sat quickly. I noticed it was a very spacious restaurant with a good size patio and separate bar.
We ordered the fruit plate for 4 to start. It featured cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple and grapes. We waited close to 20 minutes for the fruit plate (I assume we were the first table who ordered it for the day and the kitchen started to prep the fruit upon receiving our order). Disappointingly, the cantaloupe was not ripe; it was crunchy and flavorless. Also we expected the fruit to be cut up into pieces, but instead we got three planks of the melon and pineapple, and had to cut what we wanted to eat.
A few minutes later, our dishes arrived! I was very happy with the Double Wide Benedict. The sweet cornbread and veggie sausage paired perfectly with the savory egg and smoky hollandaise. I wished my egg was runny, it was cooked to about medium instead. My partner enjoyed his veggie burrito and almost (impressively) ate the entire thing. Both meals were accompanied by over-seasoned roasted red skinned potatoes that needed more of a crisp to them.
The service was great. Our coffee mugs were kept full thanks to the attentive staff. I could, however, hear many of the staff members conversations because the restaurant was so empty, and I am sure they weren't aware that customers heard about their their crazy Saturday night. Overall, we had a great vegetarian meal compared to what is available in the area (pizza, mostly).
