| - My partner and I booked the Merchants of Green Coffee cafe space in March of this year, for our wedding reception that was to take place the third Saturday in August.
Two days before the actual event, I received an email from someone representing Merchants', saying that our event was double booked! The email (which I received at 3pm on Thursday and our reception was for 6pm Saturday) suggested that we can either find another venue or they can "try" to accommodate us by having us start the event two hours later then planned, and by using pot-a-potties instead of the washrooms.
Needless to say we were devastated and spent the entire next day (we both had to take the day off work) scrambling to find a new venue. Merchants hired someone to help us with the paperwork and to find a new venue, and the event actually did happen on the Saturday, but the new space was more expensive and not really we wanted, as one of the reasons we chose Merchants was because it had a laid-back vibe and they allowed dogs in their cafe (we wanted to bring my mother's dog). We had painted a large banner with this dog in it specifically to hang on one of their walls.
This last-minute scramble was intensely stressful and caused us two days of sleepless nights and constant re-coordinating. My partner and I were exhausted by the time Saturday rolled around and as a result we looked terrible in our wedding photos (we had bags under our eyes and our skin looked grayish), and we couldn't enjoy the reception because we were so burned out. After that, my husband became ill during our honeymoon and hence we were not able to relax on our trip to Europe.
I would not recommend booking at Merchants of Green Bean because they do not have the staff, infrastructure, organization, and experience to hold events of any kind. They have a high turn over of employees and do not coordinate with the music space upstairs in regards to event planning, which inevitably leads to disastrous results (such as the case with my wedding). They also did not pay fully for the extra costs: after the event, I asked them to reimburse me for the extra fees that we incurred, and they have basically ignored all of my calls and emails. They helped us initially by returning our deposit and paying for the bartending and door staff, but due to the lateness of the cancellation all the new venue options were very expensive in comparison and we had to pay an extra $300 in total (not to mention our lost wages!). They had emailed me after the event to apologize for their oversight and they claim that they are "revamping" their event booking system, but I would be very skeptical about trusting them again for anything.
My experience with Merchants was nothing less then a horrible nightmare and I DO NOT recommend booking your event with them. I had quadruple-checked with them constantly during the several weeks leading up to the reception and only 2 days before the actual day did they realize their mistake. Unbelievable. Avoid disaster-book your event elsewhere.
