| - if i could rate it minus 5 stars i would! i have stayed here multiple times/had numerous cocktails with business clients at lustre the pool bar and each time it was wonderful. i have given this establishment a considerable amount of business... not ever again.
this time:
1) my wife and i had our bag searched as we entered the pool area (no outside beverages)
2) we actually had outside beverages (dasani sparkling water and diet dr pepper)/the bar does not provide these drinks and has a limited selection
3) security staff (not a lifeguard on duty mind you but security staff is present and always watching) approached after i discretely took a sip of the dt. dr. pepper... fyi my wife and i had already purchased drinks from the bar (and in fact had purchased several drinks and food the day before as well)
4) at all times staff members were polite
5) security asked me not to drink outside beverages... so after talking awhile with my wife we chose to leave...
6) for the record my wife and i were very quietly and modestly laying on the lounge chairs, we were barely talking above a whisper at all times and minding our own business.
why would you pay $200-300/night (parking is $40/night folks) to have security search your bag.... and then be concerned about outside beverages when it is not something they serve (even when you have purchased items from the bar)????????????
after this experience, i asked to speak to the manager of the front desk a mr. eric severson. (eric is very nice and requested that i accompany him to the second floor to speak with the beverage and food manager(as the pool/bar area is under his management). the main manager is a mr. zach harte and the assistant manager is a mr. mike anderson. i spoke to mike (also very polite) and explained the situation, after some discussion, mike stated, "if it were me, i would have allowed you to have your drinks."
my points of frustration are as follows:
1) kimpton/palomar is in the hospitality business, their policy is not hospitable.
2) customer's bags are being searched! really?!?!?! do you really want to pay 4star hotel prices ($200-300/night) and get searched?
3) the hotel cannot feign security is for any other reason then to enforce the drink policy. (invest in a lifeguard if you care about your patrons safety as death by drowning is much more likely than death by pineapple-sparkling water (sarcasm)
4) the employees (all were very nice) are doing as instructed by management, so the result of this policy is because of management.
5) if i can drink my diet dr pepper in my room then why cant i do it in other common areas (such as the pool)??? it is part of the hotel, the hotel that i payed for a room!
6) i go to boutique hotels to relax, not to pay for someone to tell me i can/cannot do something (within reason).
kimpton as a corporation will never get another dollar from me ever.
for the record: no problems ever at grand/regency hyatt, phoenician, etc...
vote with your dollars, kick-kimpton-to-the-curb
