| - Does anyone else out there sweat and go into a panic when they have to bring their iPhone into an Apple store for a look to see what's wrong? I went through all the pre-Apple jitters a few days ago when my iPhone 3G's off button refused to work. I thought, "Maybe it needs an update or can be jiggled free." So I went to the Apple store in the Eaton Centre, walked past the wall-to-wall people just playing with sample smartphones and laptops, and found an Apple "consultant" to point me in the right direction. "You need to make an appointment," he said. So he took my name and email, and asked me if I could come back tomorrow. I told him I needed it looked at now and have more to do with my life than hang out with a bunch of Apple groupies. Then I went to another "consultant" and he slotted me in for 6 p.m., about an hour away. Once I got there, I waited 10 minutes after my appointment for someone to look after me. He played with my phone, told me I'd have to get it disassembled and a new off button put in, and that it may cost $200. Are you kidding me? Then he showed me a work-around to putt the phone on sleep. As much as I love my iPhone, it's 2 and a half years old, and having already paid $200 with a three-year contract, there was no way I was going to spend anymore money. So I'm living with the work-around to turn my phone off until my contract with Telus expires in March. As for getting a new iPhone, it'll be a dark day in smartphone hell before I fork out $900 for an unlocked iPhone 5.
