  • There are some absolute talents in the cast of Baz. Sadly, the whole concept of the show is dreadful, misleading and simply was never going to work. It is not really a cabaret because it desperately tries and fails to be a sort of musical, which it doesn't succeed at either. Imagine, instead of singing songs written specifically to tell a story, develop characters, advance plot, and engage the audience, that they instead try to tell THREE stories all with some top 40 pop songs and pieces from the movies. Had they just done one of these films, probably R&J or Moulin Rouge, it would be a smash hit! They would need some original numbers though. Trust me, i know theatre and this is not experimental - it's just a big mess with no cohesive tone. Of the 3 stories, Romeo and Juliet is the only one that somehow manages to capture enough basic plot points so that someone might know what is going on. Moulin Rogue becomes this second fiddle mash up with no discernable story and Gatsby is such a catastrophe that what little they manage to even include of it becomes contrary to the actual plot. Some of the attempts at stringing the narrative together are abysmally cringe worthy, especially when halfway through they have a girl just vomit 2 minutes of exposition because they have to work Gatsby in somehow. I knew all three films and could hardly follow the cast as they moved from one irrelevant song to another. It does not produce a show which engages nor impacts the audience. For entertainment value it is also pretty poor. However, the cast is really talented and they commit themselves wholly to the show. One of the last numbers actually moved me purely because Joanna Jones is on another level! That girl has a bright future well beyond this. Some other standouts are William Evans as the MC - has a wonderful voice and is the only actor who delivers convincing Shakespeare, and LJ Benet who smashes it as Romeo. At the end of the day it was not worth the money, nor were the minuscule, extravagantly priced cocktails they serve at your tables for the show. If I were not with friends I would have asked for a refund. Save your money.
